Just like Heroes, Enemies in Darkest Dungeon are arranged into four slots, or ranks. Most enemies occupy a single rank. However, some enemies may be larger, with some Bosses even occupying all four ranks.
Targeting Rules
The following rules apply regarding multi-rank (size 2+) enemies:
- An enemy is affected by an attack on any of the ranks that they occupy.
- Attacks that affect multiple ranks will only affect multi-rank enemies once. For example, large enemies will not receive double damage from an attack hitting both of their ranks.
- Bonuses against size 2 enemies will also affect size 3 and size 4 monsters.
Wiki-Specific Terminology
For historical reasons, the wiki uses the following labels to describe enemy sizes. These labels were invented by a now inactive editor and are not used in the game itself. Furthermore, the label "small" also means "does not leave a corpse", even though enemy size is not related to whether an enemy leaves a corpse. We are currently in the process of replacing these labels with more specific size numbers and corpse information.
| Label (Deprecated) | Ranks Occupied | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 | Does not leave a Corpse when killed. Otherwise identical to "Average". |
| Average | 1 | The vast majority of enemies belong to this category. |
| Large | 2 | Can appear in any normal combat encounter. More common in Veteran and Champion missions. |
| Gigantic | 3 | Some bosses have this size. |
| Unimaginable | 4 | Some major bosses have this size. |
