As the party travels through the world of Darkest Dungeon II, they will gather many different kinds of Items.

Acquiring Items

During the course of the expedition the party will gather various items in order to prepare for the final confrontation at The Mountain. Items may be earned as rewards from many different interactions, including completing combat encounters, visiting certain Nodes, or running over debris in the Stagecoach. There are also a few different stores—the Inn, The Hoarder, and The Field Hospital—where items may be purchased. There is currently no way to sell items.

Inventory

The Stagecoach has a limited number of inventory slots—if an item is collected which would exceed this capacity, the expedition must stop and discard items before they can proceed. In certain cases new items, e.g. items picked up while running over road debris, may be discarded outright.

Inventory capacity is primarily increased by equipping Stagecoach Items. A few Stagecoach Items, notably the Harvest Child's trophy, add inventory slots directly; while others increase the number of items that can fit into a single stack, thereby compressing the inventory. There are also upgrades at The Intrepid Coast that increase the Stagecoach's starting number of inventory slots.

Unlocking

Main article: Altar of Hope

Most items are locked at the beginning of the game and must be unlocked at the Altar of Hope before they can be encountered during an expedition.

Types of Items

Currency

Relics
Baubles

Relics Relics and Baubles Baubles are the two main currencies in Darkest Dungeon II. Relics Relics are typically used to purchase consumables (Combat Items, Inn Items, Field Hospital treatments), while Baubles Baubles are typically used to purchase equipment (Trinkets and Stagecoach Items).

Candles of Hope

A Candle of Hope

A primary goal of each expedition is to collect Candles of Hope Candles of Hope, a special type of currency used to advance the game's meta-progression, permanent upgrades that persist across multiple expeditions. There are many ways to earn Candles, including progressing through Regions, reaching The Mountain and defeating the Act Boss, and completing Hero Goals and Region Goals.

Candles also have a few uses aside from meta-progression. During an expedition, Candles may be spent to hire the Bounty Hunter and to unlock certain Node choices. Once Altar of Hope is fully upgraded, Candles may be spent to purchase random items for the upcoming expedition, or to re-roll hero quirks.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of gear that grant heroes bonuses in combat. Each hero may equip up to two trinkets at a time.

Combat Items

Main article: Combat Items

Combat Items are consumables that may be used in combat as a free action at the beginning of each turn. Each hero may equip a single combat item at a time.

Stagecoach Items

Main article: Stagecoach Items

Stagecoach Items are pieces of equipment that may be installed on the Stagecoach. Stagecoach Items typically provide bonuses while traveling, e.g. passively producing Combat Items and Inn Items, increasing inventory capacity, or improving Scouting chance. Trophies, Pets, and Flames are special classes of Stagecoach equipment that cannot be purchased in the usual way, and significantly affect gameplay.

Inn Items

Main article: Inn Items

Inn Items are items that may only be consumed while at an Inn, usually restoring HP HP or Stress Stress, building Affinity Affinity, or providing buffs for the subsequent Region. Deliverables, a special class of Inn Items, are collected while traversing a Region and must be delivered to the next Inn for a reward.

Tags and Set Bonuses

Many items in Darkest Dungeon II have tags and various tag-based set bonuses. For example:

  • The Gnarly Knuckles trinket has the Weapon and Serrated tags.
  • The Fishmonger's Gloves trinket, on the other hand, has bonuses that only apply when a Serrated item is equipped.
  • Thus, equipping both items together (using both hands, presumably) will unlock the Fishmonger's Gloves' bonus effects.

There are a large number of tag interactions between Trinkets, Combat Items, and Stagecoach Items. Notably, all Cultist trinkets require another Stained item to be equipped to unlock their (potentially very powerful) effects.
