Confessions

Confessions is the baseline game mode of Darkest Dungeon II. It contains five Confessions (sometimes referred to as Acts) to choose from. The player chooses which Confession to play at the beginning of each expedition. Initially only the first Confession is available, and successfully completing one Confession will unlock the next one. The choice of Confession affects various gameplay mechanics, including:
- The final boss
- The number and choice of Regions in the run
- Ordainment chance and effects
- Flame effects
- Altar buffs
- Bounty Hunter appearance chance
Certain enemies receive buffs in later Acts, and in general the later the Act is, the more difficult the game becomes.
Whenever a Confession is completed for the first time, the player is forced to choose the following Confession when starting a new expedition.
Ordainment by Confession
One of the largest differences between Confessions is the effects Ordainment has on enemies.
All ordained enemies will receive buffs to HP,
Speed, and damage, along with offensive and defensive buffs depending on the current Confession.

Notes
- The Valley and The Sluice do not count as proper regions for the purposes of calculating Ordainment chance. Rather, they seem to use the numbers corresponding to the prior region.
List of Confessions
Denial
As an introduction to the game, the first Confession has a number of unique mechanics:

From the second Confession onwards:
- The run must traverse three Regions between The Valley and The Mountain. All Regions, including the Sluice, may appear.
- A Boss Trophy is required to enter The Mountain.
Final Boss
Obsession
From the third Confession onwards:
- More difficult configurations of enemies can spawn.
- The Antiquarian can be encountered from region 2 and onwards.
- The Exemplar will appear at the Oblivion's Rampart at the end of the final region before The Mountain.
- An additional fight is present at the Mountain before facing the final boss.
- Cultists will receive various buffs.
