Gargoyles are animate, malevolent stone statues that can be found commonly in the Ruins on Veteran and Champion level missions, and as a rare encounter elsewhere. Gargoyles have a huge PROT stat and massive bleed resistance. This is counter-balanced by low HP and a weakness to blight, making them prime targets for the Plague Doctor, Shieldbreaker, and Grave Robber.

Behavior

The Gargoyle's skillset is very simple, consisting of only two skills. Flurry of Claws targets the front two heroes, but poses very little direct threat—the damage is very low, and Shuffle chance is minimal. By the time one would encounter Gargoyles on Veteran missions, almost all heroes are immune to it because of their higher resistances. The only real danger is its fairly high crit chance, which can, if nothing else, give some significant stress.

Lash of the Tail, since it is a stun, is more dangerous for its disruptive ability. The move chance is still fairly low, but the stun chance is average, and the skill can hit any position. Additionally, Gargoyles are more likely to use Lash of the Tail on marked targets, with a 2x chance on Veteran and a 3x chance on Champion.

Strategy

Gargoyles are very weak enemies overall, with their only worthwhile features being their 50% PROT and high bleed resistance. Their combat ability is generally non-threatening outside the possibility of a stun, and their 50% PROT means that they may take multiple turns to defeat without using powerful blight effects like those of the Plague Doctor. This makes them low priority in battle, so use your turns to focus on other, more important targets, namely the Ghouls that Gargoyles often show up with. Gargoyles are also very susceptible to stuns, which is another strategy to get them out of the way and avoid the chip damage and possible crits.

Trivia

  • Despite being made of stone, Gargoyles are susceptible to blight.
  • Along with the Garden Guardian, the Gargoyle is one of the only enemies with the Stonework classification.
  • Before gaining the Stonework type, Gargoyles were Unholy/Beast types.
  • While not found in normal encounters, Apprentice level Gargoyles can be found when initiating a call for reinforcements during an expedition in the Ruins.
