The Living City is a location in the Altar of Hope where the player may spend candles to unlock and improve Heroes.

Heroes

Each hero has their own track, and as the player spends candles to progress further along the track, they can unlock the following:

• Hero-specific Trinkets
• Hero Paths
• Permanent stat buffs
• The hero's Signature Inn Item

Highwayman

Unlocked from the beginning for selection in The Crossroads, Highwayman unlocks Hero Trinkets, Hero Paths, permanent boosts to his stats and a unique Signature Item through Candles of Hope invested in his progression track. Highwayman requires 64 Candles of Hope to fully upgrade.

Exclusive to Highwayman:

• Trinkets: Rat Skull, Tormenting Locket and Cursed Coin.
• Hero Paths: Rogue, Sharpshot and Yellowhand.
• Signature Item: Morbid Joke.

Bounty Hunter

Bounty Hunter's progression track differs somewhat from other Heroes. He requires 5 Candles of Hope to unlock before he can be hired at the Inn. He does not gain upgrades to his stats, new Hero Paths or a Signature Item but gains new skills (as opposed to unlocking new skills at the Shrine of Reflection) and Hero Trinkets through his progression track. Bounty Hunter requires 45 candles to fully upgrade.

• The Hero We Need: Bounty Hunter can sometimes be hired at the Inn.
• New Skills: Staredown, Hurlbart, No Escape, Finish Him, Uppercut and Bodyguard.
• Trinkets: Utility Belt,Vengeful Kill List and Crime Lords' Molars.
