~ The Ancestor
|
|
The Antiquarian is one of the playable Character Classes in Darkest Dungeon.
Description
In general combat, the Antiquarian is by far the weakest class in the game, with extremely weak offensive performance. However, she's an effective support class, being able to heal party members, increase the entire party's DODGE considerably, and deliver decent debuffs and blight, as well as use a "reverse guard" which forces an ally to defend her while also giving them powerful defensive buffs.
Most notably, the Antiquarian boasts a number of unique properties that can help a party earn gold on an adventure:
- She causes unique loot to drop from curios and battles; Minor Antiques (worth 500 gold each and stack to 20) and Rare Antiques (worth 1250 each and stack to 5). Antiques will only be looted from curios if the Antiquarian interacts with it.
- Rare Antiques, being more expensive than their minor counterparts, are less likely to be dropped or looted. The exact ratio is 1:6.
- An Antiquarian in the party increases the amount of gold you can carry in a stack by +750 gold, bringing the maximum from 1750 to 2500.
- Every additional Antiquarian in the party will further increase it by another 750 (for a theoretical maximum of 4750 with a full party of 4 Antiquarians).
- With The Color of Madness DLC, the Antiquarian also increases your Comet Shard earnings in the Farmstead by 15% if she is in your party.
Combat Skills
“
|
A scholar, researcher, and keen archaeologist, The Antiquarian is not well suited for combat. She is, however, an expert in self-preservation - by making herself scarce in a fight, or demanding an ally protect her, she ensures her survival. If direct combat is unavoidable, The Antiquarian can use her fulminating censer to heal and invigorate allies...and to toxify attackers.

Camping Skills

A researcher never rests! The Antiquarian surveys the campsite, obtaining supply items and even trinkets that the party may have overlooked. Her peculiar utterances and strange powders have been known to put minds at ease, and strengthen corporeal hardiness.

~ Survivalist
|
|
Camping skills are special skills heroes can use while they are camping. They take a certain number of "respite" points to use, and can only be used once per camp (unless the skill says otherwise). Most heroes have three shared camping skills and all heroes have 4 unique camping skills (with the Flagellant being the exception, having only unique camping skills). Only 4 of these can be equipped at one time. Any Buffs or lasting effects given from a camping skill lasts for 4 battles.
The Antiquarian's camping skills are all about preparation. She can increase resistances to a companion, reduce stress she takes by half, and provide random Provisions. Her most unique camping skill is "Trinket Scrounge," which will provide a random trinket that the player may take. This skill is explained in detail after the camping skills.
On Trinket Scrounge
*The trinket produced will be randomly taken from the trinket pool, however Ancestral trinkets and other Unique trinkets (i.e. from the Madman or Collector) cannot be found. The trinket will most likely be of common rarity. Exact percentages are:
- (Very) Common: 10/25 (40%)
- Common: 7/25 (28%)
- Uncommon: 5/25 (20%)
- Rare: 2/25 (8%)
- Very Rare: 1/25 (4%)
These rates are not affected by the level of the antiquarian nor the difficulty of the dungeon. Longer dungeons simply grant more camping opportunities, and the heroes don't have to complete the dungeon to keep the scrounged trinket (they just need the inventory space for it). Given the sale prices of trinkets, each camp opportunity should net an overall average of 1245 gold per antiquarian. A "backyard camping" team of 4 antiquarians who enter a dungeon, use all their firewood to scrounge, and then abandon the mission will make mild to moderate amounts of relatively risk & stress free cash, assuming they sell all the trinkets (and survive a couple battles). The main penalties to abandoning medium and long dungeons are advancing the week, and taking some stress (which they will reduce with the next backyard camping "adventure").
- Medium Dungeon: ~5,000 gold*
- Long Dungeon: ~10,000 gold*
- Darkest Dungeon: ~20,000 gold* (though abandoning these missions has other costs)
(* minus the cost of food for each Camp)
If you can survive the battles to reach the first room, and any nighttime attacks, then this may be a good way to gather lots of random trinkets in search of the ones you want, selling the rest for relatively easy cash (as you don't need to fight many battles). However, simply completing missions may be better, for leveling up heroes and collecting heirlooms, etc.
Remember that (very) common Trinkets sell for only 750-1125 gold, so may be less valuable than a short stack of coins or other found items should your questing inventory become full.
Tactical Analysis
The Antiquarian's low offensive performance belies her utility on the battlefield. While her damage output is the lowest of any class, she makes up for it in other areas, and the Antiquarian is usable in several different roles depending on what skills she's given and what party composition she's used in.
While The Antiquarian's going to be the weakest member of the party, gold income is easily doubled or tripled for your trouble. The Antiquarian is great for supporting early and low-level operations to finance your adventures, and her abilities are almost entirely centered around boosting the party's long-term survivability. She's best suited in a party that's already balanced with a tank, healer and damage dealer as she's apt but unreliable at all 3. Throughout her career, her Fortifying Vapours ability heals as much as the Plague Doctor's Battlefield Medicine, and though it doesn't cure blights and bleeds, it will still buff resistances by a fairly significant amount, allowing it to be used preventatively in the right situation. Since the heal amount is low, the Antiquarian benefits most from a team that is otherwise self-healing, like the Leper, Abomination, or Hellion. Because her other effects focus on damage mitigation, she can actually help maintain a party by making it take notably less damage than it might otherwise.
Her best and strongest abilities play into her defensive, "survival-boosting" nature:
- Invigorating Vapours is a very powerful ability that boosts the entire party's DODGE stat by +3; as it gets stronger it actually makes her more viable, because she can boost the natural DODGE rates of the party by that much more (up to +10). The effect also stacks with itself, making it potentially possible to boost the party's defense by a significant amount.
- Get Down! gives the Antiquarian a significant DODGE buff that works well against enemies that are likely to target marks. It also buffs her ability to blight enemies, which can be useful as Festering Vapours is one of her more potent combat abilities at later levels. It is also an invaluable ability in scenarios where the party is shuffled by an attack, or surprised, and also allowing her to return to the backlines if she is pulled by an enemy attack.
- Flashpowder is another ability that synergizes well with her ability to bolster party defense by reducing an enemy's ACC, with the additional benefit of destealthing enemies; its only real downside is that it only targets one enemy.
- Protect Me is perhaps the most interesting ability she has, which has the dual benefit of not only reducing your available number of targets but of significantly boosting the defense of the Antiquarian's bodyguard. This can be extremely strong with high-HP characters who wouldn't ordinarily be able to guard someone, but will nonetheless enjoy the benefits of the large PROT boost, such as the Leper or Crusader. Alternatively, one could drastically boost the effectiveness of a Highwayman's or Man-at-Arms's riposte by using Protect Me on them, effectively increasing the number of riposting characters in the party by 1 and consequently drastically increasing the party's damage output.
Her combat abilities are easy to overlook but can nonetheless be useful; Nervous Stab, though weak, can hit almost any target, and though the damage and blight effect of Festering Vapors are both relatively low compared to other classes, the effect can hit anywhere battlefield and can debuff blight resistance for more powerful heroes like the Plague Doctor to take advantage of. The Antiquarian is also one of the few characters whose offensive abilities are largely not influenced by position, allowing her to work from practically anywhere.
Make no mistake, however: This character is all about boosting the amount of gold you bring home and defensive support - not out-and-out fighting. She's at her best when she helps a party minimize or avoid taking damage in the first place. Use her correctly, and she may surprise you with how effective she can be as a utility character.
Equipment
“
|
The Antiquarian wears no armor to speak of, instead relying on the power of the innumerable ancient charms and relics she has collected in her travels. Her eye for rarities is enhanced by the unsettling properties of her censer's vapours, which can offer some utility to the party in...problematic encounters.

Each Hero has Trinkets unique to them that only they can equip. The Antiquarian has seven; 2 uncommon, 2 Crimson Court and 1 common, rare and very rare. Unlike other heroes whose trinkets are only one or two different types of items, her trinkets all different sorts of curios and artifacts, befitting for her status as a collector. Additionally, none of the Antiquarian's unique trinkets have downsides, her already weak stats being downside enough.

The Crimson Court DLC added special Trinket Sets, two for each hero. They confer powerful bonuses to the hero equipped with them, and having both equipped at once yields an additional bonus, which is shown greyed out at the bottom. The origin dungeon for all Trinket Sets is the Courtyard and they all have the rarity Crimson Court. The Shieldbreaker Trinket Set, however, is only obtainable through her final 6th and 7th nightmare encounters and won't be dropped or given as a reward in the Courtyard. Trinkets you already have will stop dropping, so there's value in not selling the ones you don't like until you get the ones you want.

Trivia
- The Antiquarian's predetermined name is Josephine (previously Katharine).
- The Antiquarian was previously known as the Merchant during development.
- The Antiquarian was inspired by the Silk Road as voted by Kickstarter backers.
- The beta patch that introduced the Antiquarian coincided with International Women's Day on March 8th, 2016.
- Some of her dialogues suggest that the white-clothed person in her comic is her deceased master — an evil sorcerer whose power, and possibly soul, are contained in the censer she wields. Additionally, her level 5 censer is called "the Sarcophagus". Her Crimson Court set also hints at this.
- The Antiquarian returns as an enemy in Darkest Dungeon II, accompanied by a group of Pillagers.
- The knife used by the Antiquarian appears to be a kukri. Kukri is a type of knife commonly used in Nepal and India, which can be designed for household chores, ceremonies and combat. The Antiquarian's use of kukri, along with some elements of her attire (beads and hijab), suggest that she may be of South Asian descent.
