The feasting and revelry would last for weeks at a time. Great stone tables were set with such an abundance of rare delicacies that we would stuff ourselves until the exotic became mundane. When the lavish spread began to spoil, a ravenous gourmand gleefully proposed that we sample from the fetid pile of composting refuse ! The notion was dismissed as decidedly unhealthy. But days later, he was found cackling madly atop a heap of rancid comestibles, licking his fingers in delight.

~ The Ancestor

The Viscount is the Bloodsucker boss fought in the Courtyard during the Served Cold (LVL 5 Epic) quest.

Reaching the Boss

The dungeon itself already poses quite a big problem when unprepared. Almost every Courtyard enemy has some way to apply Crimson Curse, so the entire party will likely end up getting infected. Taking sufficient Blood into the mission can help prevent premature retreat.

The enemies generally share one huge weakness: Their low Stun resist. Especially Chevalier is crucial to get Stunned very quickly, since their attacks can quickly dispatch entire teams with a combination of crits, Bleeds and Stuns. Only Supplicant is immune to Stun, but he is by far the least threatening enemy that can spawn, so this is often not a big deal. In addition to this, most of the enemies are very quick, with Sycophant being the quickest. This makes heroes with high Speed and Stuns, especially those that can reach Rank 4, where the Chevalier's often sit, extremely valuable, such as Plague Doctor.

Another thing to keep in mind is Protection, as Chevalier can be extremely difficult to take down due to his combination of Prot and large amount of Hitpoints. Bleed is generally very effective, Marks like Houndmaster's Target Whistle can also be extremely helpful to remove Prot and Shieldbreaker's Pierce can simply ignore it.

The Crocodilian on this map is completely optional, but does drop a single Crimson Court Trinket.

Team selection for the dungeon

Recommended Heroes

  • Houndmaster - Has the best Mark to clear Prot in Target Whistle and can hit any Rank. Dog Treats offer massive burst on-demand against more dangerous encounters and he can be extremely flexible in his position. Cry Havoc can keep the parties' Stress low in long dungeon runs. His Guard Dog can als be used to prevent more position-reliant backliners from being pulled.
  • Occultist - Can Stun pretty much anything multiple times with Hands from the Abyss due to the overall low Stun resist. Additionally, he will rarely be out of position, always keeping his Wyrd Reconstruction available to heal people back up. Weakening Curse can be used to lower the Prot of Chevaliers.
  • Plague Doctor - Easily the best hero for this mission. Blinding Gas paired with Dazzling Mirror makes her faster than pretty much anything and allows her to keep the entire enemy backline locked down multiple turns in a row due to the lower Stun resist. Her Blights don't really function, but being able to pretty much ignore Chevaliers for the first two turns easily makes up for it and Incision can be an adequate option.
  • Shieldbreaker - Can ignore the Prot of Chevaliers to take them out quickly and can often onetap the squishier enemies even with her lower base damage. Her low defenses can make her a bit squishy, but with enough Stuns that's rarely an issue.

Reasonable Heroes

  • Abomination - Has decently high Speed and a solid Stun, especially when paired with Broken Key. Rage can often onetap most of the squishier enemies, especially when paired with Broken Key's +15 ACC. It struggles against Prot though, with Beast's Bile not really helping due to the higher Blight resist.
  • Arbalest/Musketeer - At Champion, Sniper Shot can serve as massive payoff for -Prot Marks against Chevaliers. Her high ACC can also help deal with a lot of the more dodgy Courtyard enemies. Her massive Healthpool can help her take a hit from Chevaliers and she can clear their Stuns with Rallying Flare.
  • Bounty Hunter - His ability to Stun Rank 4 with Flashbang is extremely helpful and Mark for Death can serve as a solid Prot-clearing option. His damage is good, but his lacking reach often makes other heroes better.
  • Crusader - Solid Stresshealing can keep the team going and Holy Lance can onetap most of the Courtyard enemies, but struggles to take out Chevaliers due to their Prot.
  • Flagellant - Can use his Bleeds to deal with Prot. Reclaim can premeptively be used to prevent Deaths against Chevalier crits. Endure can serve as decent Stresshealing with all the Campfires healing him back down with Lash's Solace.
  • Grave Robber - Lunge can be used as a quick burst option to get rid of the squishier enemies, but needs help against Chevaliers. Her reliance on Dodge can also leave her very vulvernable to Chevaliers, due to massive -Dodge Debuff.
  • Hellion - Can easily take out anything squishy in any Rank. Has a decent answer to Chevaliers in the form of Bleed, but usually needs additional support.
  • Highwayman - Can take out anything squishy in any Rank. Needs help against Chevalier's Prot quite often and their Stun can stop his Riposte
  • Jester - Battle Ballad is as good as ever and Inspiring Tune can keep the teams' Stress low, but Chevalier can simply negate his dodge with an unlucky hit and place him in a very precarious position.
  • Leper - Can onetap most frontliners even through their Prot if he has enough ACC and can neutralize a Chevalier using Intimidate by debuffing both their Spd and damage.

Discouraged Heroes

  • Antiquarian - A dodge team can get torn apart by a single unlucky hit from Chevalier due to his massive Dodge debuff.
  • Man-at-Arms - Doesn't have the greatest damage output and Rampart alone isn't enough to justify him against regular enemies. Bellow is also not too useful, since most enemies can be killed very quickly.
  • Vestal - She doesn't deal with Chevalier's very well due to her mediocre SPD and her Stun isn't good enough to keep them on lockdown very often. Her main niche of being a great Solohealer is also not very useful, since Chevalier's Stuns pose a massive threat to the team, being able to fully deny Healing with a single Stun.

The room immediately after the red lock contains the Viscount.

Fighting The Viscount

The fight consists of the Viscount himself plus three bodies which occupy the other ranks.

The Viscount as his first action will always eat one of the bodies, healing, buffing, and/or debuffing himself. Eating the biggest body will use 2 of his actions, and has a 3-turn cooldown, while eating the smallest body will use 1 of his actions.

Viscount is generally not a huge threat to pretty much any team with good damage output, since he has miserable HP and generally bad defenses. Very often a team that can beat the dungeon can easily take him out. (For reference: Champion Hag, who can easily be bursted down, has more HP (135/162) than Viscount (127/153) while being much safer from most damage due to her position in the backline) This often means that a team that can easily beat the dungeon will also beat the boss relatively easily.

Because of this, it's often wise to completely ignore the Bodies and simply hit Viscount really hard. His low Stun resist is also something to take note of, as pretty much any hero with just Dazzling Mirror can get a guaranteed Stun. His Damage over Time resists are also very low across the board for a boss, often allowing Bleeds and Blights to chew through his HP due to his 3 actions. He can move into the backline at times using Hungry Eyes, which makes having good reach a good idea. He can also push heroes backwards using Served Rare, making position flexibility useful.

Crimson Curse is extremely useful, as drinking another Vial of Blood can almost double a hero's damage while in Bloodlust, allowing the party to rush down the boss very quickly.

In return, Viscount does very little. His Body Eating rarely matters, as he barely gets any actions in when the party cycles Stuns, since a single one denies pretty much the entire buff. This is due to the buff only lasting 3 turns, which means if he is stunned for one action, he only gets one more action with the buff up, since his third action will be used in the next round to eat another body.

His damage is utterly unimpressive, as his strongest attack damage-wise, Refined Pairing has a 40% chance to simply be weaker than Chevalier's Subterranean Skewer. His other skills are extremely unreliable, with all of them needing to rely on chances to deal Stress or target multiple enemies. Combined with his very low Stun resist, the party can often lower his damage to make him barely deal more damage than a Chevalier on a good roll. His Riposte is somewhat dangerous, but his low Stun resist allows the party to simply stop it completely.

The buffs from eating a body also barely help this:

  • Miserly Morsel pretty much removes all threat from the fight, since the -25% dmg debuff cuts into his already miserable damage. The 5% extra crit can be somewhat threatening, but the -dmg also massively cuts into his crit damage.
  • Square Meal is probably the most dangerous, since the higher Dodge can throw off parties with ACC struggles. He only ends up at 48 Dodge, which is not super high, with other enemies like Hateful Virago getting similar Dodge from the start. The ACC buff can be fairly dangerous as well, but his attacks still lack stopping power, dealing generally poor damage. The extra SPD barely matters, since it doesn't affect him until next turn, where his first action will always be used to eat a body, meaning outspeeding him is still not very difficult.
  • Ravenous Feast has a massive +50% dmg buff, but basically halves his damage output by taking away one of his actions. Immediately, it becomes very easy to kill him, as he basically cannot dodge anything for the rest of the turn, giving even Chop's 95 base ACC only a 3% chance to miss. The -SPD also makes it very easy to simply outspeed him the next turn, which can often lead to a chainstun if the hero has a high Stun chance, such as Occultist utilizing Hands from the Abyss with Demon's Cauldron, which completely denies the entire buff. The -20 ACC also makes every attack extremely unreliable, giving a level 5 Flagellant, who has the lowest base Dodge of any level 5 hero, a 40% to dodge his attacks with no investment. The only time this really becomes dangerous if the party can't Stun him and he manages to get a Square Meal on the next turn, giving Viscount a single attack with his normal ACC and +50% damage. This is extraordinarily rare though, as killing Viscount quickly is extremely easy.

Team Selection

Preferred Heroes

  • Antiquarian - Can completely shut down the Boss using a Dodge-stacking team.
  • Highwayman - Deals great damage to any Rank from any Rank. Riposte can be very unreliable, since it's 85 base ACC needs a lot of buffs to be good damage, but it can counter Viscount's multitargets. A Ranged build can get around this, but has a lower potential damage output.
  • Houndmaster - Good damage to any Rank and hard to disrupt when he starts in the back. His Bleeds tick fully very fast, giving him incredible damage output. Dog Treats can increase his damage even further, with Mark also being an option even though it ticks through decently quickly. His Guard can also be used to prevent a position-reliant hero from getting pushed back. Since he's often on the team that takes on the dungeon, it's easy to bring him into the Bossfight after doing the dungeon.
  • Jester - Can buff up the team to take out Viscount extremely quickly, with Finale being able to oneshot Viscount when fully buffed up or getting the final push of damage even after just a single buff due to his miserably HP. He can be disrupted relatively easily when someone else gets pushed behind him, moving him up front.
  • Occultist - Can easily Stun Viscount even when he has the +50% Stun resist buff. His utility isn't super useful, since they wear off quickly. His damage also isn't super good, but since he is guaranteed trading his action for Viscount's that alone is more than enough. His Heal is extremely flexible, allowing him to ignore being pushed back. He's usually on most teams for the dungeon, causing him to be on most Viscount teams.
  • Plague Doctor - Extremely high damage output since her DoT effects tick through immediately. She can clear Viscount's Bleeds and she can both reposition and Stun Viscount without triggering his Riposte using Disorienting Blast. Extremely common to bring due to her insane usefulness in the dungeon.
  • Shieldbreaker - Good damage from almost every Rank into every Rank. She is commonly on dungeon teams, making her a common pick for the bossfight as well.

Reasonable Choices

  • Abomination - Rage hits insanely hard, but can't reach Viscount if he ever moves into Rank 4. Getting pushed backwards can also hurt Abom quite a bit, since Slam has very limited reach. His Stun can be very strong, especially when combined with Broken Key and Dazzling Mirror.
  • Arbalest/Musketeer - Can deal good damage if Viscount doesn't move into Rank 1. Her Mark bonus is rather useless, as Viscount's 3 actions often means it has to be reapplied each turn, unless Viscount used Ravenous Feast.
  • Bounty Hunter - Can deal good damage, but his Mark bonus often doesn't come into play due to Viscount's 3 actions.
  • Crusader - Holy Lance can deal great damage, but can't target Viscount in Rank 1. Similarly, Smite can't target Viscount in Rank 3/4, but deals great damage when he is in Rank 1/2.
  • Flagellant - Can inflict Bleed on the Viscount to chew through him very quickly. Reclaim can heal, but Viscount rarely deals enough damage before dying. While hitting Viscount isn't a problem, getting pushed back can take away his action.
  • Grave Robber - Lunge can deal incredible damage, but can't hit Viscount when he moves into Rank 4.
  • Hellion - She can deal incredible damage to each Rank, but can get disrupted by getting pushed back, since If it Bleeds can't reach Rank 1/4.
  • Leper - Deals fantastic damage when Viscount is up front, but can't reach him when he moves back or Leper gets pushed.
  • Man-at-Arms - Doesn't deal great damage and getting pushed back can disrupt him a bit. His buffs are very useful and he can Stun Viscount easily with Rampart Shield. His Guard can also prevent more position-reliant heroes from getting pushed.
  • Vestal - Deals very poor damage to Viscount and her healing is often unneeded since he dies so quickly. Her Stun is decently useful, but other heroes have much more consistent options.

Bloodbags

Bloodbags are fleshy cocoon-like sacks that hang from the ceiling of the Viscount’s Banquet Hall, and within them are the still living and half-eaten "guests" that were invited by the Viscount to join him for dinner.

Trivia

  • Unlike the Baron and the Countess, the Viscount is the only central boss that lacks a "the thirst" attack, preferring to feed from his hanging bodies than from heroes.
  • In contrast to the Emaciated Body and Body, which appear to be normal humans, the Bloodstuffed Body appears to be one of the Viscount's fellow Bloodsuckers (an Esquire, judging by the wig and general placement of the limbs along with his shoes).
  • The Viscount is voiced by Youtuber/Streamer Baertaffy, who is also the voice of the Fanatic and the Baron.
