Behold the infinite malignity of the stars!
~ The Ancestor

The Shambler is a dangerous Eldritch miniboss that lurks in blackest pitch, dropping Ancestral trinkets when killed.

Encountering the Shambler

The Shambler is usually encountered in one of two ways. When traveling at 0 torchlight, the Shambler may ambush the party replacing any hallway fight (1% chance on Apprentice, 8% on Veteran, 12% Champion). The Shambler may also be summoned by using a Torch on a Shambler's Altar, which will also set the light level to 0.

Lastly, the Shambler may appear as a boss in the Endless Harvest. This is the only case where the fight does not take place at 0 torchlight, so this version of the Shambler has slight buffs to its HP and damage to make up for the otherwise reduced difficulty.

Behavior

While the Shambler is alive the Light Meter will be fixed at 0—and the light level cannot be altered in any way with torches or skills! This greatly increases the Stress and damage that the party will receive. The party will always be surprised when the battle starts, disrupting party formation. If the party flees combat with the Shambler, the Shambler will follow them—all subsequent hallway battles will be replaced with the Shambler encounter until it is defeated.

Each round, the Shambler will likely attempt to summon two Shambler Tentacles with Obdurous Advancement or Undulating Withdrawal. When initially summoned a Tentacle is quite weak, but every turn it will heavily buff its own offensive and defensive stats with Clapperclaw. If at least one tentacle is left alive, the Shambler has a chance to use Stentorious Lament, shuffling the party in addition to causing heavy stress.

The Shambler and its Tentacles have opposite but complementary attack patterns: the Shambler deals Bleed Bleed or Blight Blight to the entire party along with a small amount of damage; while the Tentacles deal heavy damage to a single target, prioritising heroes with Mark Mark.

The Shambler is extremely slow, while the Tentacles are extremely fast and will buff their SPD even further. This means that each round, the Tentacles are likely to act first, then the party, then finally the Shambler—resummoning any Tentacles that the heroes may have killed.

Unlike most boss minions, Shambler Tentacles will not automatically disappear after the Shambler is killed. This greatly increases the difficulty of the battle: even with the Shambler gone, the Tentacles can still deal an extreme amount of damage, especially if they've buffed themselves several times.

Notes

  • Since the Light Meter is set to 0 while the Shambler is alive, the abilities above will gain +25% DMG, +5% CRIT, +12.5 ACC, not to mention heroes will take +40% stress.
  • Tentacles will be summoned even if the Shambler's attack misses.

Ancestral Trinkets

The primary reason to hunt down the Shambler is to acquire its unique Ancestral trinkets. A defeated Shambler will drop one of the five trinkets below until all of them have been acquired, at which point it will drop gems instead. Trinkets are dropped regardless of the Shambler's difficulty level, so it is usually preferable to hunt Apprentice- and Veteran-level Shamblers if the goal is to acquire them.

Strategy

The Shambler is easily more dangerous than most other bosses, and it is best to finish the quest first before summoning it as the party will likely be in very poor condition afterwards. In the worst case, fleeing the Shambler encounter will cause it to ambush the party in all subsequent hallway battles, making the quest nearly impossible to complete.

Prepare for the party to be shuffled repeatedly: the fight always begins with an ambush, and Stentorious Lament will shuffle the party as well. It is recommended to bring rank-flexible heroes, or heroes with movement skills, so they don't waste many turns getting back into position. It is also recommended to pre-arrange the party into its worst possible configuration before starting the fight so any shuffle will strictly improve their positioning.

The main challenge, even more important than killing the Shambler itself, is dealing with its Tentacles in an action-efficient way. A Tentacle must be killed quickly because Clapperclaw's self-buff makes it extremely dangerous if left alive (up to +150% DMG, +15% CRIT, +60 ACC, +75% PROT, and +9 SPD after three turns). However the Shambler will re-summon a Tentacle every time it is killed; so the party must constantly spend actions killing or stunning Tentacles, while at the same time trying to damage the Shambler itself.

The Shambler and Tentacles' alternating attack patterns can kill heroes very quickly: Clapperclaw's high damage can bring a hero to Death's Door, to be finished off by the Shambler's party-wide Bleed Bleed and Blight Blight. For this reason Holy Water, Antivenom, and Bandages are quite helpful, because they counter much of the Shambler's kill potential.

Riposte Riposte is highly efficient against the Shambler, for two reasons:

  • The Shambler's attacks hit the entire party, so Riposte is guaranteed to trigger many times.
  • Riposte triggers before the Tentacle's PROT buff, allowing it to deal more damage than normal.

Likewise Bleed Bleed and Blight Blight bypass PROT and are effective against the Shambler and its Tentacles. BleedBlight have an additional benefit because they kill the enemy on its turn. Due to speed differences, each combat round will usually proceed in the following order:

  1. Tentacles attack first.
  2. Heroes take their turns.
  3. The Shambler acts, likely re-summoning any dead Tentacles.

So if a hero kills a Tentacle with a direct attack, it will get re-summoned immediately; but BleedBlight will cause a Tentacle to die harmlessly at the beginning of the next round, effectively causing the Tentacles to lose a turn.

Stun Stun is extremely effective. In particular, stunning the Shambler on the first round is one of the most efficient actions in the fight, since it prevents two tentacles from being summoned. Likewise stunning Tentacles buys the party more time to deal with it; one Stun plus a Bleed or Blight skill is usually enough to kill a Tentacle.

If using any of the above tactics, note that both the Shambler and its Tentacles have generally high resistances, so Trinkets are required for Stun, Bleed, and Blight to be effective.

Tentacles are weakest when first summoned, before they buff their PROT. For this reason both extremely high and extremely low SPD are useful, allowing a hero to either act very early (before the Tentacle manages to buff itself), or very late (immediately after the Shambler summons them). Bleed Bleed and Blight Blight applied at this time also get an extra tick, killing the Tentacles more quickly and reducing the number of their buffed-up attacks.

DODGE can also be useful because a Tentacle does not buff itself when missing. A Tentacle without buffs is as weak as a newly summoned one, and in this case it may be preferable to Stun Stun it without killing it outright, otherwise the Shambler will just re-summon it. Note, however, that Clapperclaw buffs ACC, so it becomes much more difficult to dodge attacks from already buffed Tentacles; as usual, these should be disabled and killed as quickly as possible.

Certain area-of-effect attacks like Rake or Hew can deal enough burst damage to kill Tentacles before they become a threat.

Mark Mark compositions are especially effective at bursting down the Shambler, especially using the Houndmaster's Target Whistle.

Shambler Tentacles, like most boss minions, disable stall penalties, so a properly prepared party can stall against them. Stun Stun can be used to prolong the battle while preventing the Tentacles from attacking; not to mention, the Tentacles' self-buff increases their PROT, buying the party even more time to heal.[1]

Shambler Hunting

Players may seek out the Shambler in order to acquire its Ancestral Trinkets. The chance of any given hallway curio being a Shambler's Altar is quite rare, around 1% to 1.5% depending on the region:

Region Chance
Ruins 1/79 (1.27%)
Weald 1/79 (1.27%)
Warrens 1/76 (1.32%)
Cove 1/66 (1.52%)

Based on these numbers, the Cove would seem to be the best location to hunt Shamblers, not to mention the high proportion of Eldritch enemies makes it efficient to equip trinkets and skills that grant bonuses against them. However, one should also consider the average size of each dungeon, the number of hallway curios generated, and other strategic considerations like the chosen party's strength in a particular region.

Team Selection

Preferred Heroes

  • Abomination - Both forms are quite strong against the Shambler. Human form's Manacles, when paired with the Exclusive to The Color of Madness DLC Broken Key, is a great opening Stun Stun. Beast form can deal with the Tentacles almost entirely by himself thanks to Rake, his high DMG, and high SPD. Can reposition himself with Slam. Overall the Abomination allows the other three heroes to focus on killing the Shambler, making the fight much easier.
  • Crusader - Rank-flexible: Stunning Blow and Holy Lance allow him to Stun Stun or deal high damage every turn. His extremely low SPD allows him to act after the Shambler in order to Stun or kill newly summoned Tentacles, and also makes him a strong dancing parter. Can also (stress) heal from any position with Battle Heal or Inspiring Cry.
  • Exclusive to The Crimson Court DLCFlagellant - The hero with the strongest Bleed Bleed attacks. High SPD. Great recovery skills to save himself and allies. Can move to to the front in a single turn. Excellent synergy with the Plague Doctor.
  • Houndmaster - Target Whistle is arguably the best PROT debuff and the best Mark Mark in the game, enabling his allies to deal a lot of damage. Fairly rank-flexible. Dog Treats greatly buff his own damage. Alternatively can serve as a DODGE tank with Guard Dog. Cry Havoc and camping skills can heal the party's stress afterwards.
  • Jester - Solo is the one of the strongest DODGE tanking skills in the game, greatly buffing his own DODGE, applying a self-Mark Mark to draw aggro, and allowing him to fix the party's positioning at the same time. When stacked with DODGE trinkets, can singlehandedly negate a lot of the Tentacles' actions. (Note, however, that most good early-game DODGE trinkets, for example Camouflage Cloak and Sun Cloak, require high torch light.) High SPD allows him to Dirk Stab Tentacles before they act. All his skills also contribute to a massive Finale. Alternatively, a support Jester can buff the team's SPD with Battle Ballad. Afterwards Inspiring Tune and camping skills can heal the party's stress.
  • Exclusive to The Shieldbreaker DLCShieldbreaker - High SPD and rank-flexible. Pierce ignores PROT and fixes the party's positioning. Snake Eyes allows the entire party to pierce some PROT.

Reasonable Choices

  • Arbalest/Musketeer - Can move to the back with a single action. Mark Mark greatly boosts her damage, and will also last fairly long due to the Shambler only having 1 action per round. Can heal with Battlefield Bandage.
  • Bounty Hunter - Mark Mark greatly boosts his damage. Weak when shuffled to Rank 4, but the party can be pre-shuffled to reliably avoid this.
  • Hellion - Somewhat weak to being repositioned since Breakthrough, her only movement skill, is not very strong. PROT also reduces the effectiveness of her attacks. A Bleed Bleed build can function well since If it Bleeds can be used from rank 1-3. In many cases Barbaric Yawp's double Stun Stun may be preferable to attacking directly, but the Hellion does not usually build enough Stun chance to make this reliable against the Shambler or its Tentacles.

Discouraged Heroes

  • Leper - Useless if shuffled to the rear, and can only move forward one rank at a time. His low SPD means he'll usually act after the Tentacles buff themselves, so his attacks will struggle against their high PROT. That said, his extremely high base DMG can still make Chop and Hew effective—given proper setup and support from his teammates. Unconventionally, a duo Leper party can also be effective because it negates their greatest weakness, movement.
  • Vestal - Her healing is not as impactful as preventing damage by killing enemies or Stun Stunning them. Unfortunately she has very low damage, and Dazzling Light's Stun is not particularly reliable against the Shambler or its Tentacles. In the worst case Divine Comfort can save multiple heroes on Death's Door, but one should not allow the fight to reach this point to begin with.

Trivia

  • In the early access and the original release, the Shambler left a normal-sized Corpse after it was killed instead of a large one, despite it taking up two Ranks during a fight.
  • As evidenced by its corpse, the Shambler has purple blood.
  • The Shuffling Horror, the boss from the first Darkest Dungeon quest, "We Are the Flame," is a stronger, corrupted version of the Shambler. This version does not summon tentacles, but instead has another unit guarding it.
  • The Shambler features in two Journals that can be found in the game. The first, "Journal of Darius, Highwayman", ends with Darius' party being ambushed and slaughtered by a Shambler. The other one, "The Blackest of Fates", documents the fate of a party whose occultist, "thrice damned Mizir", activated a Shambler Altar and unleashed a Shambler upon everyone.
  • As of the Inhuman Bondage update, the Shambler will physically drag the party into another dimension. The area resembles a violet galaxy and functions the same as Pitch Black.
  • The name "Shambler" likely comes from the "Dimensional Shambler", one of HP Lovecraft's creations. The Dimensional Shambler is a creature that comes from another dimension and attacks its prey by using a form of hypnosis to make the victim believe they've been dragged into another plane of existence. However the appearance of the Shambler does not match the description given of the Dimensional Shamblers, as they are mostly humanoid. Rather the Shambler's appearance closely resembles the description given of the Shoggoth, said to be "vaster than any subway train— a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming.[2]"
  • Another reference to Lovecraft is when the narrator calls it a "Star-Spawned horror." In Lovecraft's work the Star Spawn are another name for the Cthulhi, which are spawn of the Great Old One Cthulhu, one of the central beings of Lovecraft's mythos.
  • The word "Obdurous" in "Obdurous Advancement" does not exist, the actual word is "Obdurate", meaning "stubbornly persistent in wrongdoing".
