Enemy Type

Enemies in Darkest Dungeon may belong to certain types. There are many trinkets, skills, and quirks interact with enemy types, with both positive effects (e.g. increased damage and accuracy) and negative (increased stress and decreased accuracy). A single enemy may belong to multiple types.

Human

Humans are one of the most common types of enemies, and can be divided into two groups:

  • Cultists, Brigands, and Madmen are frequently encountered in each of the game's main regions, making humans the most widespread of all enemy types. They are equally weak to Bleed Bleed and Blight Blight, and deal Bleed but not Blight.
  • Region-specific human enemies, Fungal and Swine, appear in the Weald and Warrens, respectively, and in these regions humans are nearly a majority of all enemies. Both Fungal and Swine enemies have high resistance to Blight Blight.

The following is a list of all human enemies:

Beast

Beasts are most commonly found within the Warrens (as the Swine are all half-Beast, and the type is also carried by Carrion Eaters and their larger relatives) and the Weald (dogs, spiders, and giants are all Beast-type); conversely, they are rarely found in the Cove.

Beasts will assault you with bleed, blight, disease and even lower your immunity to disease. Many of them will also cause Stress while trying to infest you with their maladies, such as the Swine Wretch and Carrion Eater.

The Hound Master's Hound's Rush does extra damage to Beasts, and some Trinkets give a hero bonus damage against Beasts.

Unholy

While Unholy can be encountered in any region, they are particularly rife in the Ruins.

Most Unholy creatures have a high resistance to Bleed but are weak to Blight. Ghoul is a notable Unholy enemy that can Bleed.

The Crusader and the Vestal both use attacks that do bonus damage to Unholy creatures, and some Trinkets give heroes bonus damage against Unholy.

Eldritch

Eldritch are mostly restricted to the Weald, the Cove, and the Darkest Dungeon.

The resistances of these creatures vary depending on where you find them. For example, the fungus-ridden Eldritch creatures of the Weald are resistant to Blight but weak to Bleed, while the fish-headed abominations of the Cove have extra resistance to Bleed, but weak resistance to Blight.

Many of the Occultist's attacks do bonus damage to Eldritch monsters, and some Trinkets give heroes bonus damage against Eldritch.

Stonework

Stonework is a rare type, with only two members (though the Garden Guardian has multiple parts). The only interaction with Stonework is the Sculptor's Tools trinket, which grants bonus damage.

Bloodsucker

Bloodsuckers dwell within The Courtyard, but will also appear in the Ruins, the Weald, the Cove, and the Warrens after the first Courtyard mission. They will never spawn in the Farmstead (expect for Crocodilian) or the Darkest Dungeon.

They are resistant to Blight but weak to Bleed.

Most Bloodsuckers can inflict the Crimson Curse.

Husk

Husks are mostly found in the Farmstead. All of them specialize in blight damage as well as inflicting Horror, making antivenom and laudanum prized items in dealing with their abilities

Husks have various resistances to Bleed and Blight.

Unique types

The remaining types all have very few members, mostly enemies found in boss fights. Unlike the types above, there are no in-game mechanics that interact with these (semi-)unique enemy types.

Appearance Frequency

The following table contains the appearance frequencies of each enemy type across all Champion-level enemy compositions in each of the base game locations.[1]

Trivia

  • Eldritch is the most popular type, with 40 different enemies in the base game having that type. Ignoring unique enemy types and enemies not found within the base game, Unholy is the least popular with a mere 17 enemies.
  • The Crimson Court DLC adds 4 new Eldritch enemies, bringing the total up to 44. The new type Bloodsuckers had the lowest population, with only 12 enemies. The Husk type, introduced in The Color of Madness (DLC), is currently the type with the lowest population; it has 13 enemies, but only 6 of them are non-unique.
  • Bloodsucker is the only non-unique enemy type in the game that does not have a Quirk based around it.
  • At some point, Red Hook Studios considered making Unholy enemies immune to Bleed Bleed.[2]
